Does AI Search Recommend Your Business? How to Check in 2026
By Juan Almonte, founder of SwiftRep (J. ALMOTE LLC)
Being #1 on Google no longer means you're in the AI answer. Here's how to find out where you actually stand — across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, in both languages.
A growing share of your customers no longer scroll Google's blue links. They ask. They type "who's the best HVAC company near me in Newark?" into ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity — and they take the answer the AI hands them. That answer names a few businesses and skips the rest.
The question almost no local owner can answer: when the AI gets asked about your service in your city, does it name you — or send the customer to your competitor?
Being #1 on Google is not the same as being in the AI answer
Here's the part that catches owners off guard. AI search doesn't just read off the top Google results. It pulls from a different set of sources — review sites, directories, Reddit threads, YouTube, and the businesses' own pages — and synthesizes its own short list. Research on AI-vs-organic result overlap suggests the top organic results and what the AI cites often overlap by under 20%.
So you can be ranking fine on Google and still be invisible inside the AI answer. Different shelf, different rules.
And it's not one shelf — it's three
The other thing owners miss: there isn't a single "AI answer." ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity each build their own short list from their own source mix, so a business can be named by one and skipped by the next. We've seen the same company score 75 on ChatGPT and 28 on Perplexity — a 47-point spread (on our 0–100 visibility score). If you only check one engine, you get a false read on where you actually stand.
That's why we measure all three by default — ChatGPT, Gemini (Google-Search grounded), and Perplexity — and report a 0–100 citation score per engine, with confidence intervals and the cross-engine spread, so you see the full picture instead of one corner of it. (Google's AI Overviews is the one engine we don't measure yet — it's on the roadmap, and we never claim an engine we don't measure.)
What a representative Newark HVAC audit looks like
Here's a representative AI-visibility audit of a Newark-area HVAC company — the kind of result we see on a well-run local business — 8 buyer-intent searches, half in English, half in Spanish, across ChatGPT, Gemini (Google-Search grounded), and Perplexity.
- The business was named in 1 of 8 answers.
- One competitor was named in 4 of 8 — it owned 80% of the share of voice.
- In Spanish: 0 of 4. Completely invisible when the customer asked in Spanish.
This is the kind of result we see on a well-run local company — strong on the ground, but with no idea the AI was handing most of its market to a competitor.
Why this happens (and what actually fixes it)
The AI trusts a specific set of sources — in this kind of audit, consumer-review sites, Angi, a couple of directories, and the competitor's own site. Get cited consistently in those rooms and the AI starts naming you.
A few truths worth knowing before you spend a dollar on this:
- Brand mentions correlate about 3× more strongly with AI citations than backlinks do. Being talked about in the right places beats link-buying.
- "llms.txt," keyword-stuffed AI-rephrasing, and mention-farming don't work — Google has publicly rejected them as ineffective. The real levers are genuine content that answers Who/How/Why, valid schema, and presence in the sources the AI already trusts.
- It's fixable. Where you stand today is a map, not a verdict.
The Spanish blind spot almost nobody audits
When a customer asks the AI in Spanish — "mejor compañía de [servicio] cerca de mí" — a completely different answer comes back. And almost no agency checks it. If you serve a Latino market, that's potentially half your search volume, invisible. We audit both languages by default, because that gap is one of the easiest wins available right now.
How to check your own, in 90 seconds
Open ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity and ask, the way a customer would: "Who are the best [your service] companies in [your city]?" Then ask it again in Spanish. Note who gets named. If it's not you — or it's your competitor — you've found a leak that's quietly sending jobs elsewhere. (Try the same question on two different engines and watch the answers diverge — that gap is exactly what a full audit measures.)
That quick check tells you if there's a problem. A real audit tells you why and what to do: your 0–100 citation score per engine across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, your share of voice versus each named competitor, the exact sources the AI trusts, and a prioritized 90-day plan to close the gap — in both languages.
